Are free games yours forever?
It depends on the kind of offer. The games on our list are the kind you keep: if you claim them in time, they stay in your account after the offer ends.
You keep it forever
- Store giveaways such as Epic Games, GOG, Steam or Ubisoft: you add it to your library for free and it is yours.
- Giveaway keys (for example from IndieGala): once activated on Steam or another store, the game stays in your account.
- itch.io games that the author makes free: you can download and keep them.
You do not keep it
- Free weekends: you play for a few days and then you have to buy it.
- Subscriptions such as Game Pass: you play while you pay for the subscription.
Always free, but with in-game purchases
Free-to-play games (like many online shooters) cost nothing, but sell items or passes inside the game.
Can I lose a game I claimed for free?
It is very rare. It can happen if you lose access to your account or if the store closes it for breaking its rules. Protect your account with a good password and two-step verification.
